Hacking group claims to have infiltrated Australian websites

National Technology News

An Indonesian hacking group claims to have infiltrated hundreds of Australian websites in apparent revenge over reports that Australia is intercepting Indonesian communications.

A group calling itself "Anonymous Indonesia" has posted links to about 200 hacked Australian websites.

"Tell on your government stop all forms of tapping into Indonesia," one hacked site reads. "Or we will make your internet network destroyed".

Last week Fairfax revealed a former intelligence officer claimed the Australian Embassy in Jakarta played an important role as a listening post for political, diplomatic and economic intelligence.

Fairfax also later revealed that Australia's electronic spy agency was intercepting Indonesian naval and military communications through a secret radio listening post on the remote Cocos Islands.

The targeted websites appear to belong to small business, such as Queensland's Mango Tree Motel and advocacy group the NSW Tenants Union.

The hacking group appears to be styling itself as an Indonesian subgroup of the infamous global hacker collective Anonymous, a leaderless collection of online troublemakers who frequent the web forum 4chan.

Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called a meeting with Australia's Ambassador to Jakarta on Friday seeking answers to media reports that Australia's embassy in Jakarta was used for spying.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa had earlier said it was "not cricket" for Australia to spy on the region at the behest of the United States.
