Telstra was attempting to recover from a BigPond email outage on Tuesday night that affected thousands of users.

The outage began at about 3pm and remained ongoing at 10pm for many.

"We're aware of an outage affecting our BigPond mail service. We're working to restore service ASAP and apologise for the inconvenience," Telstra said in a tweet at about 6pm.

At about 9.30pm it said some services were being restored, but a number of users were still complaining of issues. It later said it had "no ETA" for a fix.

Charles Tennyson, on the Central Coast in NSW, said the outage was affecting his business.

"This is costing me huge dollars," he told Fairfax Media.

Mr Tennyson said a Telstra call centre staff member told him the outage was "due to an update".

"The issue was with three of our mail storage servers," a Telstra spokeswoman told Fairfax.

"Two [mail servers] were recovered around 5.45pm [Tuesday] afternoon restoring services to two-thirds of affected customers.

"Restoration works continue on the third server this evening and they involve hardware replacement and an application rebuild.

"We are working as quickly as we can to restore the remaining services and apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers," the spokeswoman said.
